Are you Training For This Years Great North Run?

News date: 15/8/2011

  • Are you looking to enhance your training program?
  • Would you like to improve on last year’s time?
  • Do you want a training program that will prevent injury?
  • Do you need injury management?
  • Have you had a biomechanical and movement assessment?

If you're taking part in this year's Great North Run no doubt you are well underway with your training and preparation for the event.

Preparing for the Great North Run is just as important as the run itself.  Without proper training you are vulnerable to sports injuries which could hinder your chances of participating in the run, and sometimes lead to long term problems. The most common injuries for runners are; Achilles tendon, heel, shin, knee, hip and lower back pain. An invaluable addition to your preparation is a Biomechanical assessment, corrective exercise programme and Sports Massage.

At The Westoe Practice we have a team of therapists specializing in Sports injury and performance.   A Biomechanical Assesment and gait analysis is the perfect place to begin.  The Westoe Practice is one of only a handful of places in the country that uses a computerised foot scanner and video gait analysis to carry out a comprehensive assessment of your body posture and alignment. This enables us to develop a treatment plan aiming to improve body alignment and removing compensatory patterns so that it can function without injuries and pain.

Using a 3d Optical Laser Scanner we are able to create state of the art foot orthotics, specialized insoles which are designed to hold your feet and legs in their optimum position, improving the way you run and preventing injuries from occurring.  Dean Glozier, Sports Podiatrist and Director of the Westoe Practice has over 15 years experience in Biomechanics.  Dean is working closely with this year's Great North Run participants and explains "Whilst running you put on average six times your body weight through each foot. The body isn't symmetrical and quite often there are issues with skeletal alignment and muscle imbalances which affect the way we walk and run, causing over-use injuries and pain.   "

For more information on Biomechanical assessments, corrective exercise programmes, and other treatments such as pre and post run Sports Massage please call us on 0191 4250101.
